The exhibition attracted artists, cultural figures, scholars, and photography enthusiasts from across the Bay Area. During the opening ceremony, Tang received the Special Achievement Award from the San Francisco Chinese Arts Association in recognition of his artistic achievements and contributions.
Zheng Zejie, president of the San Francisco Chinese Arts Association, praised Tang’s ability to preserve the aesthetic spirit of Chinese culture while incorporating contemporary technology and digital visual language. He noted that Tang’s work moves beyond the conventional framework of photography and introduces new possibilities for visual expression.
Between Cultural Tradition and Contemporary Image-Making
Tang’s artistic practice is rooted in Chinese culture and informed by mythology, religion, history, and everyday life. Rather than using photography solely to document visible reality, he approaches the medium as a way to construct symbolic and psychologically charged visual worlds.
The works presented in Beyond Reality combined staged photography with digital visual techniques, transforming familiar cultural references into contemporary visual narratives. Moving between the recognizable and the imagined, the images invited viewers to consider how historical symbols, cultural memory, and personal experience can acquire new meanings in the present.
Through this approach, Tang expands photography beyond its documentary function. His work treats the photographic image as a flexible visual language capable of connecting tradition with technology and individual experience with collective memory.
An Open Framework for Interpretation
At the center of Beyond Reality was Tang’s belief that an artwork should not impose a single explanation on its audience.
“I do not want my work to tell viewers what to think,” Tang said. “I want it to serve as an open entry point.”
Tang encouraged visitors to engage with each image through their own cultural backgrounds, life experiences, and emotional memories. For him, the significance of an artwork lies not only in its immediate visual impact, but also in its ability to remain with viewers after they leave the exhibition and prompt them to reconsider ideas they may previously have taken for granted.
Growing International Recognition
Tang has developed an international artistic practice through exhibitions, photography competitions, and residency programs. His work has received recognition from international photography salons in Malaysia and Singapore, including honors associated with the Golden Tiger International Salon of Photography, PhotoVivo, APU, and ICPE. He has also received a Bronze Key Award from the Berlin International Art Biennale.
In 2026, Tang was selected for an artist residency at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley and presented Invisible Systems, another solo exhibition, at San Francisco State University. These projects, together with Beyond Reality, reflect his continuing investigation into cultural identity, technological change, and the evolving possibilities of photographic expression.
The Special Achievement Award presented during Beyond Reality further recognized Tang’s artistic development and his contributions to the Bay Area arts community.

Shun Tang is a Chinese visual artist and photographer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. A student of acclaimed photographer Liu Fang, Tang creates works informed by Chinese mythology, religion, history, and everyday experience.
His practice combines photography, staged imagery, and digital visual techniques to examine the relationships among cultural memory, identity, technology, and contemporary life. His work has been presented through solo exhibitions, international art programs, photography competitions, and artist residencies in the United States and abroad.
