Only 1 in 100 Buy Here Pay Here Dealers Say They Report Payments to Credit Bureaus, New Analysis of 4,481 Dealerships Finds

HOUSTON – September 09, 2026 – BHPH Finder, a new independent directory of Buy Here Pay Here (BHPH) car dealerships, today published its first industry report drawn from 4,481 verified dealer listings in 194 cities across all 50 states. The findings challenge a common assumption about in-house financing: of 2,198 dealer websites analysed, only 27, or 1.2 percent, state that they report customer payments to a credit bureau, even though building credit is one of the main reasons buyers choose these lots.

Other findings from the report:

• 28.7 percent of dealer websites advertise that they welcome bad or no credit, and 19.2 percent explicitly promote in-house financing; 2.5 percent advertise no credit check.
• Where a down payment is advertised, the median is $500, with figures ranging from $100 to $4,999.
• The average Google rating across all listed dealers is 4.41, and 56.6 percent of dealers hold a rating of 4.5 or higher; 4 percent fall below 3.5.
• Only 12.5 percent of dealers are open on Sundays.
• Arizona has the highest average dealer rating of any state with meaningful coverage (4.56), followed by Idaho (4.54) and Oregon (4.52).
• 51.6 percent of dealer sites mention trade-ins and 31.3 percent mention a warranty; 8.7 percent advertise Spanish-speaking staff.

“Buyers with damaged credit are told that a buy here pay here loan will rebuild it. Our data shows almost no dealer publicly commits to reporting payments, so that promise has to be confirmed in writing before signing,” said the BHPH Finder editorial team.

BHPH Finder verifies every listing against public Google business data and each dealer’s own website, refreshes listings monthly, and labels businesses that close. Each listing page shows hours, contact details, review excerpts and the financing terms the dealer advertises. City pages rank dealers by Google rating weighted by review volume. The site does not sell leads or placements.
