In Lifestyles of Back Yard Birds and How They Are Affected by Climate Change, author Frederic Buse draws on decades of observation to examine the lives of birds sharing a suburban backyard and the changes he has witnessed in their patterns over time.
Published by Author’s Tranquility Press, the book describes the lifestyles of more than 86 bird species living in or passing through a backyard oasis that took 20 years to develop and has been maintained for another 30. Buse looks beyond identification, recording what birds eat, when they feed, when fledglings appear, how species behave through the seasons, and how migration and population patterns have shifted.
His records stretch back decades. Over a 50-year period, Buse observed 86 species, including birds that appeared only once, species that stopped appearing, and newcomers. From 2013 through 2024 alone, he recorded 13 new species while about 13 others no longer appeared.
That long view gives the book its distinctive character. Charts and observations trace spring arrivals, fall departures and population changes, while individual accounts explore feeding, water, nesting, brooding, bathing, disease and behavior. Buse places those changes alongside both climate trends and the transformation of the surrounding environment, which shifted as nearby fields and orchards gave way to development.
The observations become especially vivid during extreme conditions. Buse recounts the severe drought of fall 2024, when more than 30 days without rain and above-normal temperatures left birds searching for water.
For birdwatchers, backyard naturalists and readers curious about climate change at the most local level, the book offers a close look at patterns that can become visible only with time. At its core are decades of watching the same place and noticing what changed.
