As Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and Meta compete in terminal-based coding agents, pricing and data-use terms are becoming as important as benchmark results.

SAN FRANCISCO – August 6, 2026 – Meta on August 5 released Muse Code in early beta, a terminal-based coding agent powered by its Muse Spark 1.2 model and available on macOS and Linux, according to the company’s launch materials. The launch puts Meta alongside Anthropic’s Claude Code, OpenAI’s Codex, and Google’s Gemini CLI in the growing market for terminal-based coding agents.

What Meta Shipped

According to Meta’s documentation, Muse Code can keep specialized background agents active throughout a session rather than recreating them for each subtask.

Meta says model calls, tool runs, and code edits are recorded in a local event log, allowing interrupted sessions to be resumed with the muse resume command.

The tool also uses isolated Git worktrees to support parallel tasks, according to the launch documentation. Muse Code is powered by the Muse Spark 1.2 model, which Meta lists as supporting a 1-million-token context window. The agent also includes commands such as /plan for approval-gated task planning and /grill for stress-testing proposed changes.

Meta highlights a kernel-optimization case study: more than 1,000 tool calls sustained over as long as 24 hours. This is a company-reported result, not independently verified.

The Contributor Pricing Trade-Off

Meta lists standard API pricing at $1.25 per million input tokens and $4.25 per million output tokens. But the Contributor tier flips the economics: approximately $0.10/M input, $0.20/M output — a discount of up to 20x.

Under the published Contributor terms, prompts and completions may be used to improve Meta’s models. Meta also states that Contributor access is subject to rate limits measured over a rolling five-hour window and is available only in selected countries.

For development teams, the pricing difference introduces questions beyond token cost, including how prompts, completions, and any repository context submitted to the service may be handled.
