Who Killed Miracle?, the award-winning orca documentary about one of the most extraordinary whale rescues in Canadian history, has been fully remastered in HD and is now streaming on The Green Channel.
“It’s so great that Who Killed Miracle? will be seen by a whole new generation of orca enthusiasts,” said writer and director Scott Renyard.
Few people born after the turn of the century have heard of Miracle. Her story begins in 1977 in Menzies Bay, where Campbell River resident and sport fisherman Bill Davis discovered a baby killer whale, alone, sick, and injured. She had been shot and was dying. Davis befriended her.
“I believe this was the first time a human befriended a baby killer whale in the wild,” said Renyard. “It was a remarkable event, when commercial fishermen were still known to shoot at them with rifles.”
Davis realized his new orca friend needed more help than he could give, so he called the Vancouver Aquarium. That call set in motion the most remarkable series of events to try and save her.
“Really, she should not have survived the rescue, but somehow she did,” Renyard said. “Her whole life was one miracle after another and she was so aptly named.”
Whale captivity was becoming a heated public issue during Miracle’s life, and she ended up in the middle of a political fight. For the people who followed her story, as with other killer whales that came after her, one question was almost impossible to answer. Was it better to keep her safe, or let her go?
