Fix It Right Plumbing Expanding to Canberra

Built on a foundation of well established systems and ran by a student of the Emyth, Fix It Right plumbing has been growing fast over the last few years. Established in 2007, by Richard Foster, it started as a small one owner company that was born out of frustration of the way plumbers went about doing business with home owners in the Seaford area. From one route to a few vans and following the Emyth philosophy, Richard quickly learned the hard lessons of running a service company and adopted the flat rate method of pricing and selling.

This included upfront pricing written in the form of Charlie Greers “Paper Towel Close” and included such services as a full house inspection and the adoption of a membership program. This encouraged return customers by offering them a discount and also providing them with priority service. 

Richard attended Charlies 4 day sales training class in Sydney where he quickly became a student of the “Paper Towel Method” and went about practicing and refining the process for the next few years, all the while adapting it to the Australian market.

The difference between the Australian market and the USA is that Australians are not responsive to sales pitches and have a very low tolerance for any behaviour they believe to be “salesy”. “You simply cannot go around doing mini sales pitches as you do your inspection and expect the customer to buy,” says Richard, “It may work in the USA, but it does not work here.”

After perfecting the ultimate service call, Richard believed the system needed to be expanded and from there he hired is first plumber James. James was new to maintenance and new to flat rate pricing and up until that point had been involved in large scale plumbing contracts across Australia. Once James saw the impact and success the flat rate system brought, he quickly adopted the “Australian” version of what the American companies call flat rate pricing. The upfront manner in which the system works all but eliminates objections after the fact and lets you discuss any concerns up front before a tool is lifted. James really enjoyed this approach as has been a student ever since.

Fast forward a few years and Fix It Right is now a very well-established maintenance company based in Carrum Downs Victoria offering a substantial range of services, from blocked drains to hot water and everything in between, this plumbing company Canberra has also become the leader in Leak Detection services in Melbourne, specialising in hidden and underground water leaks. “It was the natural progression for us as we were always waiting for outside contractors which delayed the job significantly” Richard Says. “being able to offer our customers a leak detection service on the same day dramatically improved our business by keeping the work in house but it also decreased the turnaround time for our customers which saved their homes from damage”.

One thing Fix It Right Plumbing has done over the last few years is really perfect the flat rate model in regards to these “Staged Jobs” like leak detection and blocked drains. Being able to fully quote for each stage up front is a milestone for the industry as a whole because most companies would revert back to an hourly rate when these types of jobs arrived. 

Armed with the full suite of services offered by the company and the most organised and well equipped vehicle of any plumbing company, Chris and Fix It Right Plumbing will be moving to Canberra to set up shop and offer these services and the way we do them to the Canberra market.

“We are very excited by this new venture,” says Chris “It will be great to take the training and technology I’ve learned and implemented at Fix It Right Plumbing to a new market and operate remotely. “Richard has placed a lot of trust in me with this new venture and I will be doing everything to make sure it succeeds,” says Chris. “We have a great customer following in Melbourne and that is evident by all the 5 star reviews we receive on a daily basis and it will be great to get back to Canberra to show the customers there how its done”

Originally from Canberra, Chris is very keen to take what he has learned and start building the Fix It Right name up there.

Fix It Right Plumbing is built on a combination of good old fashioned values of honesty, transparency and hard work as well as being on the forefront of new technology and innovation and this combination and new and old is going to work well with new customers in Canberra.

Fix It Right Plumbing will be up and running new calls in Canberra from March 2020 and looking to expand the team as the business and market grows.
